Recent research suggests that as many as 3.5 Million UK residents are now vegan, accounting for 7% of the UK population!
The study was carried out by CompareTheMarket.Com with the support of Gresham College professor Carolyn Roberts. It suggests that the number of vegans in the UK has risen by some 700%, compared to the number found in 2016 by an Ipsos Mori study carried out on behalf of The Vegan Society.
This latest study has also found that as much as 14% of UK residents are also now vegetarian, making the UK more meat-free than ever before. Professor Roberts suggests that this huge spike in veganism and vegetarianism is mainly due to greater environmental awareness, although it is clear that greater public awareness of animal cruelty is also a key driving factor.
For many of us, we will have seen this surge first-hand - witnessing friends and family take steps towards a vegan lifestyle, hearing of more and more celebrities eating plant-based or speaking out for animal rights, seeing extensive media coverage on veganism, seeing innumerable high street chains launch vegan menus... the last two years have truly catapulted veganism into the mainstream.
For those of us in London, this vegan tidal wave is even more evident. Recently we've seen everything from the launch of Vegan Nights, and the opening of a second Picky Wops and second Temple of Seitan, to an all-vegan Crosstown Donuts due to open, a new Soho Vegan Market on the calendar, Camden Market banning fur and vegan fish and chips hitting the big smoke.
Of course, our all-vegan store and online supermarket also came to life amongst this vegan revolution, and we're excited to be here to witness and play our part in this exciting moment in history!
